St Mary’s ‘Travel’ Tip of the Month
Small reminders which all add up to help save the planet.
Personal car transport produces 15% of the UK’s CO2 output and many other damaging pollutants like CO, SO2 and petrochemicals. To minimise this how about trying to…
Drive less, especially for short journeys. The first couple of miles produce well over twice the pollutants compared with a warmed-up engine.
Car share if possible. Make a habit of leaving earlier and offer others lifts + save on parking spaces.
Changing your car? Try a smaller car, a hybrid or an electric (EV) one. EVs don’t use more fuel for the first few miles and, if you turn off the heater, hybrids may not use much more either.
Walk for short journeys…think of the health benefits!
Take the bus into town…got a bus pass? Take a train…got a railcard?
Flying produces 10% of the UK’s CO2 output! Minimise flying and offset what’s left by buying carbon offsets. Economy travel uses less CO2.
Business flying...Is it really needed? Video calls are carbon free!
Choose an airline that uses more sustainable jet fuel. Skyscannner identifies greener flying possibilities.
Use a train or coach instead of shorter flights. Train travel uses as little as 10% of the CO2 of flying.
Holiday nearer to home…UK has a lot of interesting places to visit.
And finally…Cycle? Try an electric bike if a normal one is too hard, but the CO2 it takes to make it may be more than you save on car travel!
