Water is a precious, finite resource.
Less than 1% of earth’s water is fresh and accessible.
The south-east of England has been officially classed as ‘water stressed’.
With climate change, a need to protect our precious chalk streams, and a growing population, we could all do with using water more wisely.
Here are a few tips to consider:
Showers, Baths and Kitchen Sinks
• A typical bath uses around 80 ltr of water but many power showers use even more.
• Could you fit a flow adapter to your shower to create an aerated flow to significantly reduce the amount of water used.
Toilets
• Toilets use about 25% of household water – this is drinking water!
• Check if your loo is leaking by placing a square of toilet paper at the back of the toilet bowl. Leave it overnight without flushing. If the paper is wet in the morning, you have a leaky cistern and need to get it fixed!
Dishwashers
• Load it like a pro (top rack for glasses, bottom rack for plates)
• Clean your dishwasher regularly (check your user manual)
Washing Machines
• Maximise your wash – use a full load – and try short wash cycles.
• Wash less often – saves wear and tear on your clothes too.
Garden watering
• Use a watering can to target the plants’ roots directly to save water. If you do use a hose, fit a trigger spray to reduce wastage.
• During dry spells, let your lawn go brown. It will green up again after rainfall.
