June Eco Tip

27th May 2026
General, St Mary's

Did you let your lawn grow longer for No Mow May?

Pollinators are in decline but we hope your actions in May have helped them. Could you now take part in a citizen science monitoring scheme? It’s a short survey taking only 10 – 15 minutes. You don’t have to be an expert –simple guidance is given.

Ready? Here is the quick guide!

  1. Choose a day with a temperature of at least 15C
  2. Choose one type of flower in your garden or local area to observe and mark out a 50 x 50cm patch around it
  3. Set a timer for 10 minutes and count all the insects that actually land on your chosen, target flowers – ignore the other flowers and try to only count each insect once
  4. Identify the insects into their broad groups e.g. beetles, butterflies, bumblebees – or ‘other insects’
  5. Fill in some simple weather and location details
  6. Send your results to ukpoms.org.uk

More information and the simple recording forms are available here or from St Mary’s from 1 -30 June.

St Mary’s is also running a ‘Churches Count On Nature’ event on Sunday 7 June around 11.45am. Come along as we discover together what’s living and growing in St Mary’s churchyard!
