Speaking up for the environment…Why it matters…
It is vital to ensure decision makers hear and act upon the urgent cry of creation care. The good news is that Christians are starting to speak up. In July 2025 over 300 Christians gathered in Parliament Square for the “Act now, change forever” lobby. They encouraged MPs to treat the climate crisis as a moral and urgent priority. Our key tips are…
- Start with those close to you and remind them that environment care is part of our Christian calling.
Join or support networks like “Operation Noah” (Christian climate campaigning), “Christian Climate Action” and “A Rocha (both active in climate lobbying.) - Engage with your MP (danny.chambers.mp@parliament.uk) and local council (jporter@winchester.gov.uk).
- Stay informed including on the “Climate and Nature” bill (A private member’s bill seeking to mandate science-based targets with growing cross party and faith support).
- Support legislation. “Client earth” is a charity seeking to use the power of the law to help the environment. E.g. laws worked to save the whales and the ozone layer by banning their hunting and the use of CFCs!
- Greenpeace have lots of great free resources.
Note: The Rector has asked that he should be told of any planned lobbying which may be taken as a St Mary’s activity (which would require a PCC decision) rather than one that is purely personal.
