History of St Swithun’s Roof

St Mary's, St Swithun's

The master joiner (David) pointed out some unusual things – we have specially selected curved timbers suggesting that the trees were probably sourced from the New Forest and that the builders of the Tower were most likely boatbuilders as well.

The nails used on the roof – are hand made, but unusually made of brass. I have some and there’s lots we might collect.

The Louvre boards are oak (but very distressed) and again, we’ll be considering if we can have them made into simple crosses for parishioners to have along with the 200 year old tiles.

Finally, I was able to take a muffle board – a circular board with a nicely turned round handle which David though would have slotted into the bell to muffle the sound.

So lots of history coming to light and the structure is fascinating.
